Setting Up Utilities on the Gold Coast

Moving to the Gold Coast means setting up electricity through Queensland's competitive market, arranging water through City of Gold Coast, and getting NBN connected. Here's the full picture.

Electricity

The Gold Coast is in south-east Queensland, within the National Electricity Market. Energex is the local distribution network operator. You choose your own retailer: major options include Origin Energy, AGL, EnergyAustralia, Alinta Energy, Red Energy, and others. Compare at Energy Made Easy (energymadeeasy.gov.au). Many Gold Coast homes have solar panels, check if your rental or purchase has an existing solar system and what FIT (feed-in tariff) rate applies.

Gas

Not all Gold Coast properties have natural gas. Many homes, particularly newer builds in areas like Coomera, Pimpama, and Hope Island, are all-electric. If your home has gas, contact Origin or AGL to set up supply. Check at move-in.

Water

City of Gold Coast (the local council) handles water billing for the Gold Coast. You do not choose a water retailer, it's handled by Council. Contact goldcoast.qld.gov.au to transfer the water account to your name. Bills are issued quarterly.

Internet (NBN)

The Gold Coast has mixed NBN coverage. Established suburbs like Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, and Southport often have HFC or FTTN. Newer northern growth areas (Coomera, Upper Coomera) may have FTTP. Southern areas and hinterland may have fixed wireless. Check at nbnco.com.au. Top providers: Aussie Broadband, Superloop, TPG, Telstra, Optus, Tangerine. NBN 100 plans are most popular.
